Celebrate ‘The Freedom to Speak Out’

In September 2009, Anne Mitchell and Vickilyn Galle were arrested after reporting the bad medical practices of a doctor at their rural hospital to authorities. The case drew national attention and is the inspiration behind this year’s Perioperative Nurse Week- to empower nurses worldwide to speak out in support of patient safety in the OR.

Perioperative Nurse Week (Nov 8-14, 2010) is a time to recognize and honor perioperative nurses for their important role and commitment to safe patient care. The theme this year, inspired by Mitchell and Galle, is ‘The Freedom to Speak Out.’

We are no stranger to the importance of perioperative nursing. In fact, we recently partnered with the AORN to develop the Perioperative Collection for Mosby’s Nursing Skills. This interactive, online resource helps perioperative nurses achieve the ever-changing standards of care and is consistent with AORN’s Perioperative Standards and Recommended Practices.
