Newly licensed nurses (NLNs) face multiple barriers that hinder their successful transition to practice. Did you know that upwards of 60% of new nurses leave their first job within 6 months citing lack of support, and poor orientation as key reasons? NLNs continue to need role transition support beyond orientation. The objectives of the New Grad Council, a monthly transition program specifically designed for NLNs, are to provide professional development and emotional support in an effort to encourage community building among NLN’s.

This webinar will provide you with the requisite knowledge to replicate an initiative such as the New Graduate Council.

Elizabeth Campbell, MSN, RN and Thomas Gunning, BSN, RN

Learning Outcome:
Participants will be able to discuss the roadblocks to and identify key strategies for successful transition to practice for newly licensed RNs along with describing the function and value of creating an initiative such as a New Graduate Council as a method for supporting and retaining newly licensed nurses.

Elizabeth Campbell, MSN, RN:

Elizabeth Campbell, MSN, RN is a Nursing Faculty member at Lawrence Memorial Regis College Nursing Program, and coordinates the Nursing Labs, Clinical Placements and the RN to BSN track for ASN students. She is an Adjunct Faculty at Regis College and at Chamberlain College of Nursing in their RN to BSN online program.
Ms. Campbell holds a BSN from St. Anselm College, an MSN from Boston University and a post-Masters study completion in Forensic Nursing. She has twenty-five years of experience in Nursing Leadership positions, including inpatient unit management and Staff Development Director in community based hospital settings.
She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau, Association of Nursing Professional Development, New England Organization of Nurse Educators, and the National League for Nursing.

Thomas Gunning, BSN, RN:
Tom Gunning is currently Patient Care Director for Adult Psychiatry for Hallmark Health System. He is Co-Facilitator of Hallmark Health’s New Graduate Council. Prior to his current role Tom served as a Clinical Educator specializing in providing clinical orientation to newly licensed RNs as they transition into practice, and as a Clinical Practice Leader and preceptor on a Medical/Surgical unit. During this time, he became involved in the development and implementation of the DEU pilot project as a Clinical Teacher as well as assisting in staff education and unit preparation. Tom is also an adjunct faculty member at Lawrence Memorial/Regis College Nursing Program providing clinical education in Nursing Fundamentals and Mental Health Nursing. Tom holds a BSN from the University of Massachusetts/Boston and is currently enrolled at Chamberlain College of Nursing pursuing a Master’s degree in Nursing Education.
