The Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program
Responding Effectively through Education and Data – Terri Dover, RN, BSN, MBM
Section 3025 of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act put readmissions in the spotlight and hospitals under pressure to improve performance in this area. As a result, facilities nationwide are working to effect the operational changes necessary to avoid penalties resulting in decreased Medicare payments. By effecting operational changes, hospitals would meet the goals of improving the quality of healthcare and overall health of the U.S. population.
The rule covers all readmissions to an acute care hospital within 30 days of discharge. There are exceptions for planned procedures for AMI and same-day readmissions for the same condition to the same hospital.
